the poet?

tell me what you think about this for a character. here goes. the poet is a character provided with or responsible for writing prose and poetry relevant to the situation, life, death, etc... Resources for the writing could be assembled ahead and be included in the script. As far as his place in reality, the poet is the "inner voice" of the seeker or individual. he is the part of us that sees the beauty or the chaos in everyday life. he is the analyzer and the complicator, depending on the situation and environment in which he is placed. In the play he will speak whenever he feels necessary and must reflect the feelings that he is speaking about. anyway, tell me what you think so that we can further refine and define this character, if we choose to include him.

P.S. this was inspired by the open mic night. the constant stream of poetry from various individuals kind of put me in a state of torpor, punctuated by juicy adjectives that inspired colors and sounds, fireworks and flowers inside that little world of mine.

  1. This idea is very similar to what I have been calling the Scribe. I have noted it and developed it some in the script notes as follows:

    Character
The Scribe writes down everything he can for future generations. He is a poetry device, a video blogger, ventriloquist (talking to himself, the book of past, while talking to the future in the present); he is the “dummy” of the director, the shadow. He is consciousness of consciousness; the leper/jester. ***see text Scribe.

    Rule
    12. Speaking to the Scribe is forbidden.

    Text
Scribe Any notes from the director become part of his Text. He is free to add to them his interpretations and experiences, recollections and descriptions.

*He is a kind of madness. He may use the surveillance as mediums. He is completely aware of his odd situation and desires to express this; an image of creativity. He is the poet's situation and is paid little for his contribution, hence the ridicule. He is adapting to a new technology in hopes his words will be read/heard, but fears the world doesn't care or has changed ("they don't read poetry anymore"). Similar to the condition of the messiah, attempting to 'save the souls' with his sufferings. He is the foil to 'director as worker' -the opposite of a 9-5.

  2. The poet is the voice of people, the voice of our soul. The poet writes what we want to feel, and what we don't what to feel. He knows how and when to express himsself. He gives freedom to our thoughts, and gives courage to those who cannot see clear their own emotions. They give you the path to the trueth.

    Wonderful topic, Paul!
